Retford Central Children’s Centre: Changes to services delivered for families - Young People’s Views

Closed 29 Oct 2021

Opened 4 Oct 2021

Overview

When we make changes to any Children’s Centre building, we have to consult with local people to get their views on our plans.

We’re asking your views about Retford Central Children’s Centre as it’s next door to the Young People’s Centre and one of our options could mean that your parents could come to services next door to your Centre. This proposal will not change the Young People’s Centre which will stay as a dedicated centre for you.

This survey will take about 10 minutes to complete.  Any responses you give us will be confidential.  Thank you for your time and interest.

Background:

The Pre-school next door closed in December 2019 and since then the main building user has been the Midwifery Service from Doncaster Bassetlaw Hospital NHS Trust.

We’ve got 2 options for the building going forward:

Option 1:  For Retford Central Children’s Centre to become a Family Hub for families with children aged 0-19 and young people up to the age of 24 if they have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Option 2:  For Retford Central Children’s Centre to become a Maternity Hub for expectant parents and new parents

What’s a Family Hub?

A Family Hub is a local support centre where families can access a broad range of services to overcome difficulties and build stronger relationships amongst family members.

Family Hubs provide early help services such as parenting programmes and one to one support from the Children’s Centre Service and Family Service, clinics and appointments with the Healthy Families Team (health visitors and school nurses), midwifery appointments, breastfeeding sessions, activities aimed at supporting parents to be ready for work, career support for young people and parents, appointments with specialist services such as healthy lifestyles support, domestic abuse services, local council housing and benefits advice.

As the building is next door to the Retford Young People’s Centre, we think it would make a good location for one of these new Family Hubs as young people will continue to have their dedicated young people friendly space and parents and younger children can use the Children’s Centre building next door.   If it goes ahead, it will be the first in Nottinghamshire.

What’s a Maternity Hub?

It’s a place where mums to be and their partners come for ante-natal appointments, parent education classes and where post-natal appointments are held, once their baby is born.  The community midwife team would be based there, with daily clinics and also clinics at some of the other Children’s Centre buildings across Bassetlaw.  Babies wouldn’t be born at the Maternity Hub – mums to be would still have the usual choices available to them.

The Children’s Centre Service team would still have a small room there, for one to one appointments, but most activities would be at Hallcroft Children’s Centre, out in the community or in family homes.

This consultation is to find out local views on these two options:
